Brussels [ENA] Social media have become one of the main arenas for information and public debate. New European regulations aim to limit disinformation and illegal content online. At the same time, the discussion continues on how to balance platform regulation with the protection of freedom of expression, user rights, democratic transparency and the open exchange of ideas online today.

In recent years social media have taken on a central role in shaping public opinion. Platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram and TikTok are no longer only tools for entertainment or private communication. They have become places where news spreads, political debates develop and social movements gain visibility. In many cases public discussion now begins online before reaching traditional media. This transformation shows how strongly digital platforms influence the information ecosystem and the way societies interpret current events.

At the same time, the speed with which information circulates online has also made it easier for false or manipulated content to spread. Disinformation can influence public debate, especially during sensitive moments such as elections or political crises. For this reason several governments and international institutions are trying to introduce clearer rules for large digital platforms. However, regulating social media is a complex challenge. Decisions about which content should be removed and which should remain online directly affect freedom of expression. The coming years will likely focus on finding a balance between platform responsibility, technological innovation and the protection of democratic debate in the digital public space.
