Rome [ENA] Rebuilding trust and redefining Europe in tough times has been the title of the"Dialogue on Europe" organized in Rome by Das Progressive Zentrum on 5th April. The parallel workshops dealt with four main topics: Sustainable growth, Migration and integration, Social Cohesion, Populism with special focus on euroscepticism. This Italian-German Town Hall Meeting got the patronage of the Federal Foreign Office and of IAI.

A town hall meeting is an informal public meeting, function, or event derived from the traditional town meetings of New England. The participants in the meeting in Rome worked intensively on topics of up-to-date interest like Migration and Integration with a special focus on the refugee crisis. In this case the best practice of Germany which remains " a country with a kind heart but with rules" defined a common ground for a sustainable dialogue. Das Progressive Zentrum, an independent think tank, founded in 2007 as a non-for profit initiative, invited representatives from the civil society, NGOs, think tanks, cultural sector and from the media to gather and discuss the most urgent challenges Italy and Europe have to face.

After its successful start in Athens, the “Dialogue on Europe” made a stop in Lisbon and then Rome. The Progressive Zentrum aims to work at a political agenda that promotes progressive politics and reform shaping a new progressive narrative for a modern dynamic society, a just economy and a modern state of the 21st century. It analyses future problems and develop progressive, scientifically based solutions. Young thinkers, authors, researchers and activists gathered in Rome developed in the workshops focused on the project areas the topics for a panel with the german Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth. The topic of Migration and Integration was very interesting and coss-examined questions provided high quality debate.

The lack of coordination of the national policies concerning migration, the need of common asylum policies and the overcoming of the criminalization of refugees have been key topics discussed in order to exit from an Emergency approach. Data entry information and the importance of the education system have been emphasized. Germany is strictly against closing borders but it's important that refugee know if they can stay or they have to go. In the case of remaining in Europe migrants and refugees have to become equal members of the European society. In the case of migration too, best practices are crucial and it is important to learn from each other in Europe.

The present state of the European Union's integration process which has suffered dramatically the economic and financial crisis needs measures taken in order to win the resentful relationship between Southern European Union member states and Germany. Distrust and misunderstanding open the way to "Populism" , euroscepticism, right-wing populism and political disaffection in Eurrope. Rome Town Hall Meeting contributed to create mutual understanding through dialogue trying to bring about a shift towards a new perspective and a problem-solving approach of the terrific challeges European Union is facing.
