Rome [ENA] The new European Space Program will represent a real revolution in the protection of monuments, encouraging the monitoring and the analysis activities for the purposes of protection, conservation and security of the cultural heritage. The protection of cultural heritage will play a major role in the forthcoming "European Space Program 2021-2027". Initiatives will be launched to ensure the development and use

of Earth observation applications from the space concerning the cultural heritage sector. Italy has indeed proposed to include the safeguarding of cultural heritage as one of the priorities of the Program for the use of the products and services of the Copernicus System for the observation of the Earth from Space.A request that was welcomed by both the Council and the European Parliament and the texts already prepared are adequate for Italy. The Copernicus Committee has decided to launch a Task Force to identify the services and products suitable for the protection of cultural heritage and has proposed to Italy to take the lead of the project . This task will be carried out by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage .

The Task Force will work closely with the coordination structure of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and will receive the support of the Italian scientific community and, in particular, of ISPRA and CNR at the forefront of the sector. Almost all Member States have already joined the Task Force and appointed their experts. In taking over the European leadership in the use of Copernicus and Earth observation systems from space for the protection of cultural heritage, Italy takes a big step forward for its immense cultural heritage.
